ACCELERATED READER What is Accelerated Reader? Accelerated Reader is a self-paced, computer assisted reading program that tests reading comprehension and provides daily monitoring of a student's reading skills. Students receive continuous and immediate feedback to help teachers individualize reading instruction so that every student achieves maximum reading success. How Do Students Participate? Students participate by following three easy steps: 1.) Select and read a book (fiction or non-fiction) within their assigned reading range. 2.) Take a computerized reading practice multiple-choice quiz to measure comprehension of the book. 3.) Recieve immediate feedback on quiz results that help teachers assist and motivate reading, monitor progress, and target trouble-spots. How Do Parents Participate? Parents participate by ensuring that students maintain their Student Reading Logs and read for the recommended practice time. 60 minutes/day reading practice time is recommended for Elementary School and students reading below grade level. 45 minutes/day reading practice is recommended for Middle School. The time blocks can be broken up over the day between the classroom and home into manageable sessions of 10, 15, or 20 minutes. What Are Accelerated Reader Points And How Are They Used? Each Accelerated Reader book is assigned a point-value based on its length and reading level. Students earn a percentage of the book's points based on how well they test on the book's Reading Practice quiz. In this way, points earned are a measure of reading practice. The more time students set aside for reading practice, the more likely they earn a higher percentage of a book's point-value when they quiz.
